Assistant Materials Scientist-Term Job at Argonne National Laboratory
As an Assistant Materials Scientist (term) with the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division (CSE), you will participate in goal-oriented research in the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR) Program to investigate the transport and activity of multivalent cathode materials. You will:
-
Develop materials selection processes, experimental designs, and methods to achieve programmatic goals.
-
Evaluate oxides for ionic and electronic conduction.
-
Develop electrochemical and impedance spectroscopy techniques to evaluate these materials and to examine the performance of these materials under ex situ and operando conditions.
-
Design and synthesize novel materials.
-
Plan and conduct experiments to identify, characterize, develop, and evaluate advanced materials and processes for electrochemical devices.
-
Provide an understanding of the mechanisms of operation and possible methods for improvements of advanced electrochemical cells, including advanced batteries, by using advanced characterizations, electrochemical diagnostics, interface characterizations, and modeling.
-
Design and conduct cell assembly, testing, and performance measurement.
-
Establish and maintain collaborations with JCESR teams, including computational material scientists and materials characterization specialists.
-
Develop and maintains laboratory equipment and facilities.
Position Requirements
Candidate should possess considerable knowledge of and experimental expertise in a variety of electrical characterization methods (e.g., solid-state impedance spectroscopy) as well as electrochemical techniques. Considerable knowledge of synthesizing and handling of air-sensitive materials is required. Considerable interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are required.
Additionally, the candidate should exhibit considerable skills in the following areas:
-
Safe laboratory practices with a firm understanding of materials interactions and stability
-
Knowledge of the physical and chemical principles underlying materials properties, phase equilibria, thermodynamics, crystal structure.
-
Conducting physical analysis of oxide and sulfide materials, particularly in the area of electrical property measurements, including impedance spectra modeling and analysis
-
Surface structure analysis using X-ray techniques
-
Ability to define and provide novel solutions through independent effort
This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemistry, materials science, or engineering or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with 2 to 5 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
