The Jackson Laboratory is a world leader in mammalian genetics and human genomics with locations in Maine, Connecticut, California, and China. We also educate current and future scientists and provide critical resources, data, tools, and services to researchers worldwide. Being part of a small, specialized library and working closely with the Head Librarian, the Assistant Librarian will be involved in all aspects of providing proactive and responsive library and data support services to JAX’s diverse faculty, researchers, staff, and students. Problem solving skills and innovative thinking will be essential in helping to define, create, and implement the Library’s future services. Requirements
  • Provides comprehensive library research and reference support
  • Develops, coordinates, and leads online and in-person library outreach, training, and orientation initiatives to faculty, staff, and students
  • Manages the Library’s licensed databases and electronic resources including journal article packages, electronic book collections, and individual electronic journal and electronic book titles
  • Oversees and directs borrowing, lending, and document delivery operations; resolves complex problems concerning requests, copyright, and resource sharing systems
  • Designs and executes collection digitization projects and programming in consultation with stakeholders for the JAX archives and Mouseion, the institutional repository of archival material and JAX research output.
  • Designs and creates learning resources for the Library’s internal and external websites.
  • Analyzes innovative technologies to support the evolving needs of JAX researchers and improve library services, including resources, technical services, research data services, and administration.
  • Engages in training and professional development activities, including biomedical research trends and methods, scholarly communication, and research data management.
  • Participation on JAX campus-wide committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • American Library Association accredited degree in Library and Information Science
  • At least two years professional experience, preferable in a biomedical library.
  • Experience in advanced database searching and instruction, web page design/maintenance. Proactive and collaborative working style.
  • Experience with back-office systems such as interlibrary loan, electronic resource management system, or integrated library system.
  • The Assistant Librarian performs their tasks with limited supervision. The Librarian must take into consideration the needs of the entire laboratory when purchasing and subscribing to research materials. To that end, they must listen, elicit, survey, monitor, envision, anticipate and recognize the present and future needs of their users.
  • The Library is the steward of the research of the Jackson Laboratory. Our holdings include not only the published scientific research but also the history of that research. Our Archives contains over 5,000 historic photos, as well as the papers of C.C. Little, George Snell, John Paul Scott, John Fuller, among others. Our collections continue to draw U.S. and international science historians to the Lab as part of their research projects. Digitizing this information will be part of the strategic plan as well as making this information findable and accessible to the world through the enablement of these data with linked data.
  • Through efficiently delivering external resources that are not part of our collection, the successful candidate will aid in the broadening of our subject knowledge in a cost-effective manner.
