Job Summary: The Student Life Assistant Director I provides oversight and planning for the development, implementation, and delivery of one or more programs, services, or activities within a department. May supervise professional staff. Part of the Student Life Career Progression Plan.
Additional Department Summary: The Assistant Director of Leadership Programming, University Programs serves as the department’s primary facilitator in creating comprehensive opportunities for leadership development and campus engagement for the entire campus population. They focus on strong collaboration, purposefully defined programs, and building effective student leaders through intentional advising.
This position also serves as the primary advisor of the student-led Homecoming board, which plans and implements campus-wide signature homecoming programs, in conjunction with campus partners, as well as the UA Homecoming Steering & Advisory Committee.
Administration: Represent the Director when necessary. Assist in administrative projects including developing strategic plans and goals, policies and procedures, staff development, and assessment and evaluation plans for the office.
Leadership Programming and Oversight: Provide oversight to plan, execute, and host leadership and student development focused events for University Programs to include but not be limited to leadership conferences, guest speaker series, skill-development focused events, and event programs focused on divisional strategic priorities. Coordinate with vendors, on-campus partners, and other stakeholders to execute event needs. Work with students and staff on the comprehensive event planning process, including: organization management, risk management, financial and marketing plans, best practices research, and other logistical details of programming and event planning. Provide professional presence and oversight at events.
Student Development and Advising: Recruit, select and train qualified student leaders and student staff for the UP team and the UA Homecoming Student Board to plan, execute, host, and market campus-wide programming.
External Collaboration: Leads department initiatives to expand cross-campus collaboration through programming, resource allocation, and knowledge sharing.
Fiscal Responsibility: Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures. Responsible for holding staff accountable for completion of required training.
Responsible for completing required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience; OR Master's degree and one (1) year of experience. Must be able to work early mornings and frequent nights and weekends. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to be flexible with work schedule. Excellent written and oral communications skills along with strong interpersonal skills. Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks. Knowledge of student development and the ability to work with a diverse population of students and staff while fostering an inclusive environment. Skills in leadership programming and/or student development, event planning, and staff management. Demonstrated knowledge and ability in budget development and monitoring. Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve problems effectively and independently.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in higher education, communication, leadership, or a related field, and three (3) years of professional experience in student leadership, development, programming, or activities. Experience working within a higher education (university or college) environment. Graduate or professional experience in student leadership, programming, development, organizational leadership, and advising.
