Job Summary
This is a full-time staff position with a primary responsibility to contribute to the vitality of the campus community, academic program, and student experience by assisting the director of bands in building a strong instrumental music program of 150 students or more and multiple ensembles. Primary accountabilities include: serving as assistant director of the Marching Comets, servings a director of other athletic bands, conduct other ensembles as assigned; heavy external recruiting; providing assistance and support for the director of bands, music program faculty and admissions staff in recruiting the general instrumental and music major/minor population of the college. Other duties include working collaboratively with the athletic and admissions departments on events and recruitment activities. The Assistant Director of Bands will assist in leading the band program through successful teaching, recruitment, administration and leadership. With appropriate credentials the opportunity exists for future appointment to the faculty. This position reports directly to the Director of Bands.
Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for the band program including serving as assistant director of the Marching Comets;
  • Direct the basketball pep band, and other athletic pep bands;
  • Direct or assist with other music ensembles as assigned by the Director of Bands;
  • In consultation with the director of bands and instrumental faculty, provide leadership in design aspects of the marching band, including but not limited to drill design, music arranging and other visual elements;
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment in which students can learn and achieve to the highest level of their ability;
  • Attend athletic events and parades inside and out of the college where the Marching Band is utilized in a significant way such as halftime performances, pep band, etc.;
  • Assist in planning, and hosting recruitment events such as the yearly high school honor band;
  • Teach music courses as needed for the department in secondary areas of expertise such as: Applied lessons, Aural Skills, Music Theory, Music Appreciation, etc.;
  • In consultation with the Director of Band, establish annual rehearsal and performance goals for ensembles directed.
  • Work collaboratively with the athletic department and other internal and external constituencies to bring added vibrancy to the campus and local community through music;
  • Establish and maintain successful relationships with public school band directors throughout the state;
  • In consultation with the director of bands, director of admissions and instrumental music faculty, execute a plan for external recruiting of new incoming students who will participate in instrumental music ensembles, including sourcing prospective students and assisting them through the admissions process;
  • Meet or exceed annual enrollment and recruiting targets;
  • Establish positive relationships with external constituencies, including alumni, donors, and local and regional communities;
  • Work collaboratively with the music faculty to strategically plan for the growth and development of the music program, particularly within the bands;
  • Work collaboratively with the music faculty to assist potential music majors/minors with the required audition process;
  • In collaboration with the director of bands, establish a five-year plan for growing participation in the instrumental, including annual recruiting and retention goals;
  • Maintain accurate and current records and a travel schedule appropriate for recruitment goals and within approved budgets;
  • Demonstrate commitment to the college's mission, academic and strategic visions and to the Olivet College Compact;

Qualifications
Required: A bachelors degree in music (instrumental music education preferred) and at least 18 hours toward an appropriate advanced degree is required; Candidates should have a record of highly successful teaching and performance in high school and/or collegiate band programs. Candidates should have strong recruitment and retention skills with a strong commitment to music education. Candidates should have the ability to manage and communicate on social media platforms. Candidates must be able to positively collaborate with the Director of Bands, music staff, admissions, and athletics in a team environment toward continued growth of the college instrumental program.
Preferred: A master's degree or higher. Candidates should have extensive experience in drill design and music arranging.
