Primary Purpose: Assist in the direction and management of the overall program of instrumental music for band students. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Assist in activities designed to achieve district, region, and state recognition.

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
  • Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
  • Knowledge of beginning and intermediate level instrumental instructional techniques
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures
  • Ability to manage inventory and personnel as assigned
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Experience:
  • Applicable student teaching experience, approved internship, or related work experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Program Planning

  • Assist in direction and development of beginner/intermediate instrumental performers, assist with high school marching band, concert bands, soloists, and ensembles as assigned.
  • Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
  • Assisting in implementation of band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and UIL activities.
  • Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the band/performing arts area.
  • Support band booster club activities.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
  • Recommend policies to improve the program.

Budget and Inventory

  • Assist in compilation of budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
  • Assist in maintaining the current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
  • Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, storing, and issuing all band equipment.

Instruction

  • Develop and implement plans for instrumental music programs and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Student Management

  • Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook(s).
  • Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open and effective communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers, inclusive of newsletters, conferences, or other means of direct communication.
  • Maintain professional relationships and strong communication with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

Personnel Management

  • Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band staff.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; band/music equipment

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Outdoor and indoor work; regular exposure to noise; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours

Other: Frequent district and occasional statewide travel
