Job Summary:

The Langston University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (LU-SAAS) is seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor of Soil and Environmental Sciences with strong background in agricultural soils and fieldwork. This position has an expected Time and Effort (T&E) involving all aspects of the Land-Grant mission and will be approximately 50% research, 30% extension, 20% teaching. The final T&E will, however, be aligned with the strengths of the individual selected for the position. Strong candidates will leverage high quality research and/or extension in soil, environmental health, and plant sciences with emphasis given to pioneering approaches in agricultural soil and environmental health sustainability. These approaches will support LU-SAAS researchers, and Oklahoma farmers, producers, and communities. The opportunity to serve in a leadership role is also available.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will play an integral role in the growth of Langston University new state-of-the art Horticulture Education and Research Center.
The work may require walking over rough and uneven land and using shovels, spades, and sampling augers to gather samples or examine a soil pit exposure.
The task requires working with other researchers in advising, designing, and implementing proper soil management for all field research experiments at onsite/offsite research locations, and farmers and communities' agricultural fields.
Gauge drainage and irrigation needs and requirements, and develop agricultural practices to conserve soils, prevent/control erosion, and water stagnation, and permit the sustainable farmland use.
The position requires a focus on agricultural soils, plant production, and environment health for LU-SAAS research and extension activities and Oklahoma farmers.
Conduct studies on nutrients and water use efficiency in crops. Perform studies in soil stability, moisture retention or drainage, and environmental impact while managing soils for efficient crop production and erosion control.
Develop extramurally funded research projects that integrates basic and applied agricultural soil and environment health approaches for long-term farm use and sustainability.

She/He will be expected to lead all aspects of agricultural and environmental soils analyses and developing the productive and sustainable land use system; monitor the condition of land and develop soil conservation technologies, conduct studies to recommend crop types and rotation system to apply.

Collect, assess, and examine soil samples to develop informative composition profiles and manage soil for landscape design.
Assess soil quality, and design and implement remedial measures to restore soil fertility and health.
Assess the need and effect of agrochemicals used in farming to aid land restoration and crop growth sustainability.
She/he will be involved in LU-SAAS's extension activities across the State and emerging controlled environment specialty crop production systems in Oklahoma and beyond, including greenhouse production for small farms, indoor and outdoor farming systems.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Soil Science, Agronomy, or related fields
