Position Summary:
The Pacific Northwest College of Art @ Willamette University (PNCA) is seeking a highly energetic, inclusive, and committed educator and professional to teach courses and contribute to the ongoing development of the undergraduate Art History program at the College, with contributions to graduate-level mentoring and cross-instruction in the MA Critical Studies program.

Art History at PNCA is centered in a broad, multicultural and multidisciplinary approach to the history of art, design and culture as foundational knowledge of artistic practice. The Art History faculty work within the Liberal Arts Department which comprises 30% of the core curriculum for PNCA students.

We are inviting applications for a full-time faculty member who will make a sustained and vital contribution to the future of our program and will both foster a pedagogical approach to Art History that is informed by critical pedagogy and supports interdisciplinary approaches. We are seeking a faculty member with terminal degree and expertise in world art history, with specific theoretical or research expertise in one of the following sub-specialties': digital culture/emerging media, design or time arts and their histories. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the College and larger University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: developing and enhancing curriculum, advising students, participation in campus and University-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, building external partnerships and industry relationships, and maintaining a vibrant creative practice in the region and beyond.

Overview of Duties
  • Teach six courses a year, which would include core department offerings as well as newly developed courses in area of expertise.
  • Help maintain instructional standards and outcomes across curriculum and syllabi.
  • Foster a pedagogical approach to Art History that is practice-based and informed by critical perspectives that support applied engagements with interdisciplinary approaches and innovative practices.
  • Build and develop curriculum in conjunction with faculty aligned with University priorities.
  • Mentor undergraduate students; Provide academic and career advising.
  • Coordinate team teaching within Foundation-year Exploring Visual Culture (AH125) and Introduction to World Art History (AH210).
  • Supervise the Art History Minor.
  • Work with faculty in development of department policies, curriculum content, and evaluation methods.
  • Participate in faculty governance, academic committees and campus life.
  • Keep up to date with professional and industry best practices.
  • Foster an inclusive, equitable and diverse learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned PhD, or terminal degree, in Art History or closely-related field from an accredited institution is required at the time of application.
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience relevant to the position at the undergraduate level.
  • Demonstrated experience in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, teaching environment.

Qualified Candidate will have several Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching global art history, contemporary art topics encompassing a variety of media.
  • Evidence of pedagogical practices to reach students from a variety of backgrounds, including those who identify as neurodivergent, LGBTQIA+, and those from underrepresented groups.
