Commonwealth Heritage Group is searching for archaeological field technicians for archaeological fieldwork throughout
Wisconsin and Illinois. Fieldwork will primarily involve Phase I pedestrian and shovel testing survey.

Archaeological Field Supervisors will lead a team that is responsible for conducting shovel testing, pedestrian survey, and site
documentation, which includes feature and artifact identification and analyses; site descriptions; photographs; and mapping.
Archaeological Field Supervisors are required to perform the following tasks in the field:

  • Oversee a field crew of up to 4 field technicians to ensure that t survey is conducted according to client, state and
federal standards
  • Walk up to 6 miles a day in rugged terrain while carrying appropriate gear
  • Oversee the excavation of shovel tests and ensure that stratigraphic profiles and associated paperwork is completed
  • Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts
  • Conduct archaeological survey and testing
  • Complete site sketch maps
  • Complete field forms accurately and concisely
  • Use GPS units (Trimble and/or ArcCollector-based systems) for navigation and recording field data
  • Photograph resources
  • Provide daily project summaries to the Project Principal Investigator


Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field, have
completed an accredited archaeological field school, and have a minimum of 6 months of field experience (i.e., survey, testing,
data recovery). Advanced degrees are preferred. Candidates must have experience identifying and recording prehistoric and
historic resources in the Midwest. Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental
conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). Candidates should also have good organizational
skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks. Pay starts at $19/hour.
