Eligibility list will be maintained for up to six months.

DEFINITION:
Under the direction of a Police Captain, enforces various City ordinances and regulations governing animal control; maintains records and reports; impounds, feeds, cleans and disposes of animals as needed, and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.


  • Enforces City ordinances by patrolling assigned areas.
  • Captures and impounds dead, sick, injured and abused animals.
  • Investigates cases of cruelty, neglect, abandonment, animal bites and barking dogs.
  • Explains various ordinances regarding animal control to the public; posts signs and distributes flyers and pamphlets.
  • Writes citations for violations of City ordinances related to animals; responds to court requests for contested citations.
  • Assists in the removal of deceased animals from City property and other locations; assists the public in trapping domestic and wild animals.
  • Quarantines biting animals for observation according to established guidelines.
  • Prepares and maintains an animal control vehicle; utilizes a variety of animal control devices and equipment including leash, muzzle, traps, catch pole, net, radio, and tranquilizing equipment.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Methods, equipment and materials used in animal care, control and shelter.
  • Best practices in animal control.
  • Applicable Federal, state, and local laws, ordinances and department rules and regulations.
  • Geographical layout of the county.

  • Modern office processes and procedures.
  • Relevant computer hardware and software applications.

Ability to:
  • Speak, read, and write in English language.
  • Demonstrate aptitude for animal control work and a willingness to handle a variety of animals.
  • Learn basic animal control and care principles, processes, procedures and practices.
  • Learn to operate animal control equipment.
  • Learn basic first aid.
  • Work outside normal business hours.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel; and is occasionally required to taste, smell, run, climb, balance, crouch, and crawl; is frequently required to lift and carry up to 25 pounds. The employee is required to perform strenuous tasks requiring muscular strength and coordination is occasionally required to lift and/ or moves up to 100 pounds; is occasionally required to maintain body balance while ascending or descending ladders or open stairs, and maintain body equilibrium while bending at the waist or at the knees.

Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, an employee may come in contact with a member of the public or an animal by touching, controlling, sitting by, and riding with the individual or animal. Hand-to- hand exchanges of documents, money, personal property, clothing and other items may be required.

Work Environment:
The job may require immediate response to criminal or medical emergencies where blood, body fluids or other medical hazards may be present.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED Equivalent. Ability to learn basic animal control and care principles, processes, procedures and practices and serve the community with courtesy and respect.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
A valid driver license is required at the time of application. A valid Arizona driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • An employee in this class is required to live within fifteen (15) miles of the City limits, and within the United States, San Luis residency preferred.
  • Requires availability to work flexible schedule.
