Position Summary

AmeriCorps EXL is an exciting opportunity to be part of an ambitious team working towards closing the achievement gap and removing barriers to learning for youth. Students are at the heart of our work. We are seeking a proactive, enthusiastic, and independent AmeriCorps EXL Tutors to support the academic and social skills development of high-need students in local area schools. We partner with schools to identify students who would benefit from a positive, adult role model that can give targeted academic support as well as mentor students to be their most resilient selves.

Program Overview

The goal of the program is to provide comprehensive support to students who are not working at grade level leading to improved performance and academic success. The program applies a layered approach implemented by the AmeriCorps Mentors for K – 8 students. All students at the school site benefit from the support of organized collaborative games and conflict resolution during recess/break and lunch. Students in need of additional support will be assessed and assigned targeted mentoring services in Social Emotional Learning.

Essential AmeriCorps Duties

  • Active Recess is structured and organized activities facilitated by adults in order to include students in games / sports while building conflict resolution skills.
  • Plan and facilitate active recess activities and games during core day and after school recess/breaks and lunch times, focusing on supporting positive student behaviors
  • Members are assigned a daily game that they facilitate and engage with students.

Mentoring: Conduct 60 minutes of SEL Mentoring each week with students 1-to-1, in small groups up to 3.

  • Students will work with the Mentor for the duration of the school year.
  • Mentors will facilitate lessons. These lesson plans are created by the members and / or provided by the teacher.

Mentors will support approximately 20 students throughout the course of the school year.

  • Expanded Learning programs support selected students beyond the classroom, often outside the normal school day hours. Expanded Learning programs are often referred to as After school programs.
  • Support the after school program daily via the homework help hour.
  • EXL Members will engage with groups of students to lead physical, SEL (social emotional learning), and enrichment activities.
  • EXL Members will help facilitate the student summer program.
  • Participate in training and professional development to improve quality services for youth
  • Participate in National Service events to support the local community
  • Members will work with their school site team to recruit both one-time (ex. presenters) and ongoing volunteers during the school year.

Service Commitment

  • Full-time, ten-month commitment serving a minimum of 1700 hours, may include some evenings and weekends
  • Hours are generally Monday – Friday from 8:00 – 6:00PM 40-45 hours per week (varies slightly by Partner Site)
  • Service hours are expected to occur in-person at school sites.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Positively represent EXL in a variety of settings, including recruitment opportunities, staff meetings, trainings, and service events
  • Assist with other community building activities at the Partner Site
  • Create and maintain positive relationships with program staff
  • Submit monthly Great Stories and volunteer data in the OnCorps tracking system
  • Conform to regular, timely attendance requirements at the assigned service site
  • Duties take place at multiple site locales throughout California with training seminars at designated locations. Position requires occasional travel. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors, as well as some night and weekend hours

Qualifications and Characteristics

  • Must be at least 18 years of age (17 with parental approval)
  • Clear criminal background check (Truescreen, fingerprint based Fieldprint & CA DOJ/FBI)
  • Submit current, clear TB (tuberculosis) test
  • Provide proof of complete COVID vaccination
  • Must have at least a high school diploma or a GED by start date
  • Must either be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
  • Must not have more than 3 terms of service previously with AmeriCorps State and National programs
  • Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated, and professional
  • Strong personal standards of excellence, ethics, and integrity
  • Ability to be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all the program’s safety policies and rules

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $2,000.00 per month
