The Artificial Intelligence & Autonomy Innovation Center (L130) is seeking an experienced and driven AI Innovation Strategy Execution Lead to join the leadership team. The AI Innovation Strategy Execution Lead will report to the AI & Autonomy (AIA) Innovation Center Director, will work with leaders across MITRE, and will be accountable for the effective advancing, coordinating, and executing MITRE corporate AI strategies and goals – particularly centered around AI assurance.
The AI & Autonomy Innovation Center (L130) is looking for an AI Innovation Strategy Execution Lead with both a deep understanding of the current AI & Autonomy landscape and priorities and a clear set of ideas for how MITRE can grow its impact in enabling consequential uses of AI. Expected impacts of this position are to include:
- Build new academic partnerships to align national Research & Development (R&D) to produce AI capabilities for MITRE sponsors while creating a pipeline for talent
- Creation of a foundation of AI assurance capabilities
- Industry engagement to raise the national awareness on AI vulnerability while also leverage growing body of industry incidents, data, and use cases
- MITRE AI assurance brand across the science and technology community and establish new external funding sources
- Work in concert with MITRE’s Center for Data Driven Policy to engage with policy makers and shape AI and autonomy policy
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with leaders within L130 and across MITRE to identify and pursue opportunities to grow MITRE’s impact in AI assurance and enabling consequential uses of AI
- Shape work in collaboration with MITRE portfolios to drive AI strategies and goals in both public and private sector priority areas
- Strategic planning and shaping R&D activities within L130 to achieve its priorities
- Serve as an advisor to the AI and Mission Focused Autonomy platforms to ensure alignment with MITRE’s top AI & Autonomy mission challenges
Corporate AI Long Term Measure Execution Oversight
- Work with leaders within L130 and across MITRE to effectively execute the AI Horizon strategy and ensure activities are aligned and coordinated to further our corporate AI Long Term Measure.
Partnerships and Initiatives
- Develop and maintain relationships with key technical leaders across MITRE program divisions, MITRE Labs, MITRE Platforms, and externally for new project collaboration opportunities, technical skillset development, and technical quality
- Support MITRE internal R&D program to fund and pursue projects beyond our direct sponsor requests
- Partner with Innovation Area Leads, Outcome Leads, and Project Leaders to identify and execute work proposals aimed at injecting innovation across critical department projects and potentially developing new program areas
- Coordinate technical outreach to industry, academia, and other stakeholders, ensuring that best practices and technologies are brought to bear on technical products
Technical Leadership & Impact
- Partner with business and people leadership, providing insight to operationalize MITRE AI corporate goals - this includes quality of staff hired, development of staff, and training priorities to ensure the appropriate technical priorities are met
- Ensure the technical strength and strategic alignment of the work by shaping its content, participating in technical product definition and reviews, and bringing a perspective that reflects knowledge of the domain, understanding of the state of the art and practice in technology, and comprehension of MITRE and key external communities
- Ensure individual projects are delivering against MITRE AI priorities at a technical level, while partnering with project leaders to ensure the project itself is the right level impact for MITRE, during its inception and onset
- Collaborates with the department leadership in deliberately growing the organization’s core competency areas and ensuring deliberate early career workforce shaping aligned with the AI corporate strategies and goals by growing expertise based on training, mentoring, and project work opportunities
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering with 10 years related experience; Master’s with 8 years related experience; PhD with 7 years related experience; or equivalent combination of related science or engineering education and work experience.
- The ability and willingness to maintain an IC or DoD TS/SCI with polygraph clearance.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in AI Assurance, AI Security, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Algorithmic Foundations of Optimization, Data Mining or Machine Intelligence
- Can-do attitude and demonstrated history of fulfilling the above tasks, working both collaboratively and independently as needed
- Experience with planning, executing, and presenting complex trade studies while balancing cost and schedule constraints, mission analysis, information assurance, systems integration, and understanding of the relationships between operational, technical, and system’s architecture
- Demonstrated proficiency and strength in verbal and written communication skills and excellent ability to effectively communicate technical materials to nontechnical audiences
- Demonstrated proficiency in virtual and live presentation of complex technical issues
- Active IC or DoD TS/SCI clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant work experience, including full time industry experience or as a researcher in a lab.
- Ability to create, articulate, and motivate visionary concepts and outcomes and achieve practical outcomes in complex, cross-FFRDC environments.
- Demonstrated expertise in broad areas of AI and Autonomy spanning across civil sectors and national security missions.
- Demonstrated understanding of the civil sector and the national security mission space, major sponsors and programs, and external research landscape.
- Ability to build strong internal and external partnerships, experience with leveraging solutions from leading academic and commercial research groups.
- Active IC or DoD TS/SCI with polygraph clearance.
