Yu Ming Charter School is a non-profit, tuition-free network of public schools located in Oakland and San Leandro and open to all residents of California. As a leader in Mandarin Immersion education, our mission is to nurture our inclusive and diverse community to become empowered, engaged, and outstanding global citizens. We currently serve 766 students across three campuses, and continue to grow our enrollment each year. Our intentionally diverse student body comes from many racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds representing 70 zip codes across the Bay Area and 29 home languages. Founded in 2011, Yu Ming is the first Mandarin immersion public charter school in the state.

Position Overview

The Student Culture Specialist plays a pivotal role in fostering a positive, responsive, and relationship-based school culture that aligns with Yu Ming’s mission. Working closely with the Principal and Student Support Services Team, the Student Culture Specialist will work to implement strong “On-Compass” behavioral systems (school-wide positive behavioral intervention systems, mentor groups, social-emotional support, scholar comprehensive human development work, scholar circles, family engagement) and restorative “Off-Compass” behavioral intervention systems (restorative discipline, tiered student supports, classroom management training and coaching) so that every Yu Ming scholar is nurtured to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.

The Compass Coach will support scholars to develop the skills and mindsets to lead fulfilled, joyful and purposeful lives and will support the school community to nurture positive, caring, and consistent relationships, routines, and systems.


Core Responsibilities


Scholar Behavioral Support and School Culture

  • Implement multiple school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
  • Support the Compass Team in the implementation of the On-Compass and Off-Compass (discipline and behavioral support) systems.
  • Collect, maintain, and use behavioral data to identify students that are in Tiers 2 and 3 to support in implementing Tier 2 and Tier 3 support plans
  • Support the execution of the school's culture vision including policies and practices for student behavior, wellness, safety, and attendance.
  • Support the execution of school-wide restorative and community building practices aligned with the Compass framework including Circles, student mediation, leadership programs, and positive playground culture.
  • Supervise student arrival, dismissal, lunch/recesses, class transitions, and enrichment programs, as needed
  • Support recess team to ensure a strong recess and playground culture that is safe, play-based, inclusive, and fun.
  • Track, document, and effectively communicate accurate student behavior and school culture data to relevant stakeholders.

Teacher Support

  • Support teachers in using Yu Ming’s behavioral support systems

Family Relationships & Support

  • Lead conversations with families/guardians about student behavior, support plans, consequences, and behavioral successes.
  • Forge connections between support for students at home and school to establish the most successful environment for students to thrive in.
  • Be responsive to family concerns in a kind, solutions-focused and timely manner.

School-Based Responsibilities

  • Enforce, uphold, and exhibit school’s values, student management policies, and culture
  • Participate as a hiring team member and support with onboarding and development of new hires
  • Attend family meetings, orientation, staff professional learning sessions, and other school-based events
  • Attend faculty Circles weekly

QUALIFICATIONS


Required

  • B.A. or B.S.
  • Appropriate California Certification (or transferable out of state equivalency)
  • Experience with Google apps and other educational technology
  • Experience with one or more of the following: restorative practices, counseling-enriched education, , social-emotional learning, positive behavior intervention systems (PBIS), Understanding of the Common Core State Standards
  • Superb interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, colleagues and families
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change; ability to work in a dynamic, creative and start-up learning environment
  • Driven adult learner dedicated to his or her own professional growth, including learning new and innovative teaching practices
  • Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a solutions-oriented attitude

Preferred

  • M.A. or M.S. in Education or Subject Area
  • Three years experience teaching in relevant grade(s) or subject

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

12 Months


COMPENSATION

$28-$30/hr, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package for employees and dependents.
